Harvard Model Congress Dubai 2017
Harvard will be hosting a Model Congress in the American University of Dubai from the 19th to the 21st of January. A Model Congress is a simulation of the American Congress, Senate and House of Legislation. It is similar to an MUN in practice, the only difference being that HMC will be a simulation of the American Legislation rather than the United Nations. It will be an interesting conference, considering that there is a new president and government.
At Harvard Model Congress Dubai, delegates have the unique experience of learning about the American government and international politics in the Middle East, one of the most important areas in the geopolitical landscape today. Delegates will spend time throughout the conference in committee sessions and full sessions. During committees, delegates will discuss and debate relevant topics, using briefings entirely written by our staff of dedicated Harvard undergraduates. The delegates will assume the roles of representatives, congressmen, agents, and countries as they negotiate, forge compromises, and draft legislation to be presented in full sessions.
There are two main categories of committees, domestic and international, both of which have exciting new changes for 2017. Domestic committees are comprised of the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the Presidential Cabinet. These committees will give delegates from around the world the exciting opportunity to see first hand how the United States Congress works. International committees, which range from the African Union to the United Nations Security Council, cover a broad range of international issues relevant to the world today.
The domestic committees this year are:
Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)
House - Education and Workspace
House - Homeland Security
House - Science, Space and Technology
Presidential Cabinet
Senate - International Affairs
The international committees this year are:
World Bank
African Union
United Nations Security Council
The conference will cost about AED 1200/- with an additional school payment of AED 975/- that will be divided among all delegates. The total projected cost per delegate is AED 1275/- This cost is subject to change.
I understand that some people find this cost too high for a 3 day conference, but this cost is justified as the conference is one of the most well organised and fun conferences. Also, you get a certificate from Harvard University for participating, which adds priceless value to your CV.
If you are interested in the conference, please fill up the form below. Note that filling up this form does not guarantee your participation in the conference.
IMPORTANT: Day 3 of the conference, January 21st, is also a SAT Testing Day. It is possible for you to attend the conference and skip the third day if you still want to participate in the conference. Keep this in mind if you are giving the SAT on January 21st and also want to participate in the conference.
